Default Front Shocks 86 vs 88

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between shocks for an 86 GT compared to shocks for an 88 GT. From what I can tell it's the width of the spindle, and maybe the bolt spacing.

Full disclosure, I have Koni Specials that fit an 86, but they don't fit my 88. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just not lining them up right or if they really don't fit. I need to get spacers if I'm going to make them for sure a fit. Curious and a bit frustrated.
I drive a Prius.... and an 88 Mustang GT. Guess which one is more fun.

I thought the biggest difference was the width of the bottom of the strut that connects to spindles. The 86 and earlier spindles were smaller than the 87+

Yeah, that's definitely different, but I think the spacing between the two bolts there may be slightly different, like 1/4" or less. Wondering if anyone can confirm this?
